Abstract

Purpose: This study examines how everyday social interactions at Nagoya Coffee Shop in Bulukumba, Indonesia, support informal market access for home-based food producers. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study used observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Six participants were purposively selected, and product inventory records identified five supplying microenterprises. Data were analyzed to describe social interactions and consignment practices. Findings: Four interconnected consignment stages were identified: product delivery, display near the cashier, customer purchase, and payment settlement. The arrangement relied on interpersonal trust rather than written contracts. One producer reported reduced effort in direct selling and varying earnings across sales channels. However, incomplete and inconsistent financial records prevented reliable profit comparisons or causal conclusions. Research Implications: Practical recommendations include systematic stock records, transparent pricing, clear procedures for unsold products, and explicit payment agreements. Further research should examine multiple producers and retail locations to assess market access and financial outcomes. Originality: This study explains how a third place can function as an informal market intermediary by connecting everyday social interactions with practical consignment stages, without assuming that improved market access necessarily increases profits.
